Upcoming Trip Plans

For this post I thought I’d do something a little different and talk about what I have planned for our upcoming trip next week. My family and I are taking a quick weekend trip down to the Walt Disney World Resort May 19-21. The travel party consists of 6 adults (age range 55 to 22) and 2 kids (ages 10 & 8).

Friday
The 8 us going are flying down Friday afternoon, arriving in Orlando around 4 PM. We are staying at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort in Theme Park View rooms. This first night we will mainly chill around the hotel and maybe go swimming until it is time for dinner. For dinner, we will be taking the highway in the sky aka the WDW Monorail to Disney’s Polynesian Resort to eat at ‘Ohana. Our reservation is at 8:25 PM, so hopefully we will be seated by a window and we can see the new Happily Ever After firework display at 9 PM. After dinner, my sister and I are planning on going to The California Grill Lounge at the Contemporary Resort for a drink or two. If there’s no seating available in the lounge, we will probably go back to the Polynesian to the Tambu lounge for a Lapu Lapu.

Saturday
Breakfast will be each man for himself. My father usually heads to the Grand Floridian Cafe at 7:30 AM when they open. My mother normally orders room service. While my sister and I have a granola bar and coffee and head straight to the parks for rope drop. Our first morning we will head to EPCOT since it is the only day we will have any real free time. I normally rope drop ride Test Track, single rider, and can usually get 2 or 3 rides in with almost no wait. At 11:00 AM, once World Showcase opens, we will spend the hour eating lunch at various kiosks. At 12:30 PM my family will all be meeting at the Land Pavilion, where we will meet our Private VIP Guide for the day. We have the same guide requested that we always use and she is fantastic. We will start our VIP tour in EPCOT with Soarin’ Around the World, Frozen Ever After, and Test Track. Then we will head over to the Magic Kingdom where we will start off by watching the Festival of Fantasy Parade, then hit all the major rides across the park. At 7:30 PM we will say goodbye to our guide till tomorrow. We will have a quick service dinner then check in for our Firework Dessert Party at 8:00 PM. Once the fireworks are complete, everyone except my sister and I will head back to the hotel. I have 3 FastPass+ Reservations for that evening for Space Mountain, Jungle Cruise, and Big Thunder Mountain from 8:30-9:30 PM, 9:30-10:30 PM, and 10:30-11 PM, respectively. I also already have paper FastPasses for Dumbo, Journey of the Little Mermaid, and Monster’s Inc Laugh Floor.

Sunday
Today we will have a character breakfast at 1900 Park Fare. At 9:00 AM our VIP Guide will be meeting us in the lobby at the Grand Floridian before whisking us away to Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Here we will go straight to Kilimanjaro Safaris followed by Expedition Everest, Dinosaur, and Adventurer’s Outpost. After Animal Kingdom, we will head to Hollywood Studios for Tower of Terror, Rockin’ Roller Coaster, and Toy Story Midway Mania. Depending on how we’re doing on time, we may head back to Magic Kingdom. We’re required to have our guide until 4:00 PM due to a 7 -hour minimum. Then we will head back to the hotel, grab our luggage, and make our way to the airport for an evening flight.

Disney World Private Premium VIP Tour Guide (Updated 5/23/17)

Finally after my seemingly long hiatus, I’m finally going to talk about one of the most expensive Walt Disney World splurges out there: the Private Premium VIP Tour Guide Service. First some background, my family and I have used this service on 5 different trips to the Disney World Resort. For 3 trips we have used the guide for 1 day and for the other 2 we used the guide for 2 days. Also, these are my own personal opinions and beliefs, but you may have your own; no one is wrong. Disney is all about what you make of it. A little overview of what I’m going to cover: What is the service and what are its perks? Where can they take you? How much does it cost? and is it worth it? Here’s the actual description of the service form the Walt Disney World website:

After being picked up from your Central Florida accommodations in a private vehicle, experience unparalleled hospitality at one or more Theme Parks, ride your favorite attractions and watch magnificent parades, live shows and select nighttime spectaculars from special reserved viewing areas.

Some of the personalized services include:

  • A flexible start time, picked by you
  • Visits to multiple theme parks in one or more days, if desired
  • The ability to enjoy some of your favorite attractions efficiently, even repeatedly
  • VIP seating for parades, select stage shows and nighttime spectaculars
  • Shared insight from your highly knowledgeable VIP Tour Guide throughout your tour
  • A completely customized experience based on your preferences

So let’s talk about each of these personalized services. First, a flexible start time picked by you. Starting out you have two options on meeting your guide: they can pick you up or you can meet them at the park, the choice is yours. They have white vans and will whisk you away to any of the parks you choose. There is a minimum time requirement of 7 consecutive hours. We normally head to the parks in the morning do some rides eat lunch at about 11/11:30 and have our guide meet us at the restaurant at 12:30. Then we use the guide for the minimum 7 hours, trust me that’s all you’ll need, and then say goodbye at 7:30/8 just in time for dinner. The reason we do this plan is because if you have your guide come pick you up in the morning, your tour will run over lunch and if you choose to have a table-service lunch, you’ll be paying for your guide while you’re eating and they’re not doing anything for you. Also, if you do choose to have your guide eat with you, you do not have to pay for them. Disney pays for their meals and any snacks they buy during the day. If you ask to buy their meals, they’ll just respond “It’s ok, Mickeys pays for my meals.”

Visits to multiple theme parks in one or more days. In my opinion, park hoppers are a must if you’re going to splurge on a VIP guide. You can cover so much ground in just one day. You can easily cover 2 or 3 parks in one day with a guide, depending on which parks you choose. On this trip, our guide said that one day of a guide allows you to do 2-3 times the amount of stuff you’d normally get done in a day at Disney. She also said that a successful day in Disney is usually considered when you do 8 things, one of which is a table service meal and viewing a parade or nighttime spectacular. Travel time between parks is also cut down since you have your own van. The guides are able to use special backstage parking lots and roads located around the different parks. When you arrive backstage cast members will scan your magic bands right there so you don’t have to go to the main entrance. If you’re arriving at Hollywood Studios or Magic Kingdom they will have snacks and bottled water available that you can take into the parks. Also if you’re on one side of the park and want to ride a ride on the other side of the park, they’ll drive you to the other side if it would be quicker than walking. They also have the ability to guide you through backstage areas when cutting across parks to cut down walking times.

The ability to enjoy some of your favorite attractions efficiently, even repeatedly. This is where the VIP Guide’s value really comes out. Your guide serves essentially as an unlimited Fastpass. If you want to go on the Tower of Terror 6 times in a row, he or she can make that happen. All you do is show up to the Fastpass line, the guide shows their badge, and you go straight in the line as if you had a fastpass. Once you get to the load zone ride, your guide may or may not ride with you, it’s their choice. If they choose not to, they will be waiting for you at the unloading zone once you arrive. The only ride the guides are not allowed to ride is Kali River Rapids in Animal Kingdom. It’s important to note, there is no straight to the front of the line access with the guide. They only get you access to the Fastpass line. There are some exceptions like Space Mountain and Haunted Mansion. For Space Mountain, after you go through the fastpass line the first time and ride the ride, if you wish to ride again your guide will take you up this back passage that leads directly back to the loading zone, then you get on again and repeat as many times as you wish. For the Haunted Mansion, instead of going in the normal FastPass line, we went up the exit and got on as people were unloading. They are trying to expand this special, quicker access to some more rides. The ones they are currently working on are Expedition Everest, Kali River Rapids, and Test Track. If you are going to use a VIP Guide realize that they only help you with rides that have a Fastpass line. If you want to ride Prince Charming’s Carousel and there’s a 40 minute wait time, you’re just gonna have to stick it out.

VIP seating for parades, select stage shows and nighttime spectaculars. This one is pretty self explanatory. The locations for parades are nice because they normally don’t have anyone on the other side of you, so all the characters and performers direct their attention towards you. We haven’t used the guide for fireworks since we stop our guide services right before dinner. For the Magic Kingdom, the 3:00 parade viewing area is the Main Street Train Station. When we have used it for the Main Street Electrical Parade, the location was right by the firehouse where the parade started, but depending on the night, it could be on the bridge between the HUB and Liberty Square. It’s also important to note that other people with VIP guides will be in these viewing spots too.

Shared insight from your highly knowledgeable VIP Tour Guide throughout your tour. These guides know their stuff. Most of them are park relations cast members before they become VIP Tour Guides. They know everything from random fun facts, the location of hidden Mickeys, which line to go in if there are options, to where all the high scoring targets are in Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin and Toy Story Mania.

A completely customized experience based on your preferences. The guides main job is to do what you want them to do. If you want to ride Rock n Roller Coaster ten times in a row, they’ll let you do that. They will provide suggestions based off what they think you’ll like next, but the choice is ultimately yours.

The Cost: Surprise, this experience isn’t cheap. The price per hour can be anywhere from $360-$525 an hour for a 7 hour minimum. On very rare low peak season times there will only be  a 6 hour minimum. This would be like Mid-September on a weekday, which is considered Disney’s lowest crowd time. As for the rate, 4 out of the 5 times we’ve used the guide the price has been $400/hour. The first time we used the guide it was $385/ hour which was on President’s Day weekend 2013. That was also when people staying in Disney Resorts had a reduced rate (about $20/hour); however, this is no longer in effect. Everyone pays the same price no matter if you’re staying on property or not.

Is it worth it? If you have more money than time, absolutely. If you have to work your Disney Trip into your budget, heck no. Also the more people you have in your group, the more value you get out of it. One tour guide works for up to ten guests, if you have 11-20 guests you have to get 2 guides, and you’re paying the same price for both. When my family goes to Disney, there’s anywhere from five to nine of us, so it cost efficient. We always stay at Deluxe or Villa resorts and have 3 or 4 rooms. If staying at the Grand Floridian, we can fly in Friday night, go to the parks all day Saturday with a VIP guide, as well as Sunday morning to late afternoon also with VIP guide, and then fly out late Sunday night. This is cheaper than having the same number of people and rooms, and staying for a whole week without using a VIP Guide even once. If you’re going to use a guide just for one day during a multi-day trip, I suggest having one the last day you’re in the parks. If there’s any rides you missed out on, they’ll be sure to get you on them. If you use the guide your first day, we learned this the hard way, you’re gonna have a great time and ride so many rides, but the next day it’s back to waiting, and waiting, and waiting.

I hope you enjoyed this insight on this very special tour service. If you have any additional questions please leave a comment below and ask me!

Extra Magic Hours

One of the biggest questions when visiting the Walt Disney World theme parks is: to stay or not to stay at Disney resorts? While it might be cheaper to stay off property, I personally believe the pro of Extra Magic Hours (EMH) outweighs all of the cons associated with staying on property. If you aren’t familiar with EMH, they’re extended park hours open to all guests staying at Disney Resorts. EMH will be available either 1 hour prior to regular park opening or 2 hours after regular park closing. Normally only one park will offer EMH per day with the hours being either in the morning or evening, but never both. Sometimes when Magic Kingdom is scheduled for morning EMH, either EPCOT or Disney’s Hollywood Studios will have evening EMH. Since guests who are not staying at WDW Resorts will still be in the park, guests wishing to participate in EMH will have to show either their magic band or Key To The World card prior to entering the line for every ride.

Now you might be like, I could have just read that from the Disney website, why am I talking about it on here? Well, I’m here to tell you just how much you can ride in that extra hour or two. These experiences are based on my two most recent trips to the Walt Disney World Resort.

Hollywood Studios Morning EMH
-Rockin Roller Coaster 2x
-Twilight Zone Tower of Terror 3x

Animal Kingdom Morning EMH
-Expedition Everest 2x
-Dinosaur 1x
-Primeval Whirl 1x

Magic Kingdom Evening EMH
-Haunted Mansion 1x
-Big Thunder Mountain 4x
-Space Mountain 6x

Magic Kingdom Evening EMH
-Big Thunder Mountain 2x
-Splash Mountain 1x
-Haunted Mansion 1x
-Space Mountain 1x
-Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin (a lot, like 8+)

Now you might be like, hey how did you go through Space Mountain 6 times in a row. Well, that would be in like the final 30 minutes of EMH when you can literally continuously ride the ride as fast as you can run through the line.

EMH Tips and Tricks
– Try to focus on one small area of the park, you don’t want to waste your extra time walking everywhere.
– Rides with FastPasses are still more popular during EMH. Consider riding some non FastPass rides for more frequent riding.
– Best EMH Session (in my opinon): Magic Kingdom MORNING
– Worst EMH Session (in my opinion): Animal Kingdom MORNING

EMH Notes
-There are no FastPasses during EMH
-Not all rides are operating during EMH (different rides for morning and night as well)
-EMH are subject to change as well as operating rides

Resort Review: Disney’s Animal Kingdom Villas Kidani Village – 1 Bedroom Suite

My last trip to Walt Disney World in Florida was in February of 2013. I had time off from school so my parents, sister, and I decided to take a trip to the magical land of Disney (or should I say world). We decided to book this trip kind of late (Mid-December) and it was Presidents’ Day weekend. My parents let me decide where to stay since we usually stay where they want to (usually Disney’s Beach Club resort). However, I was talking to one of my friends who goes to Disney World about 3 times a year and she said they always stay at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge. She talked about how the giraffes were always right outside their window and how this one gazelle kept trying to jump over the electric fence. So we book a 1-bedroom suite in the Kidani Village with a savanna view.

If you aren’t aware. Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge is separated into 2 separate villages: Jambo (the main village) and Kidani (villas). Jambo House does have some villas on the higher floors, these are Disney Vacation Club (DCV) properties for DCV members. The Kidani villas are actually DCV properties, but are available to non-DCV members by cash reservations. The villas at Kidani are also slightly larger compared to Jambo, also Kidani has a slightly better bathroom situation in my opinion. In Jambo House there is one master bathroom vs in Kidani Village there is a master bathroom and second bathroom with shower in the living room (for suites).

Anyway, back to our experience. The room was very nice and much bigger than we expected. The master bathroom was huge and featured a tiled Lion King panorama. The full kitchen was nice and big, but we never really used it. The beds were normal, nothing extraordinary for a hotel bed, but not bad in any way. What I thought would be the coolest part, turned out to be not so great — the view. I don’t remember the name of the savanna we were on, but we basically got a good long look at some long-horned cattle.  Now if you just love long-horned cattle, this might be the best place for you; however, I’m from the southwest, I see long-horned cattle on my way to work every day. We did see a zebra for like a good 5 minutes one day, but that was about the only other thing we saw. Another aspect that I didn’t like was the only form of transportation to and from the parks was via Disney buses. Now I don’t mind the bus system; however, the transportation time from AKL to one of the parks takes forever (except Animal Kingdom).

Let’s get to everyone’s favorite topic — FOOD! If it’s not your favorite topic, well it is mine so I’m gonna talk about it. We had dinner our first night at Sanaa, which is the only unique/themes dining experience at Kidani Village. Jambo House has a Fine/Signature dining restaurant called Jiko – The Cooking Place, as well as another unique/themed dining experience called Boma – Flavors of Africa. Sanaa was delicious to say the least. I definitely recommend the Indian Bread Service, which comes with 3 kinds of bread made en restaurant as well as 3 accompaniments. For the main course most of us ordered the Potjie. Which consisted of rice served 2 meats of your choosing (there were at least 5 options). We each ordered 2 different meats which allowed us all to have a little taste of all of the options. The butter chicken seemed to be the favorite between the 4 of us. For dessert we had a custom cake ordered from the Disney Cake Hotline prior to our arrival. The cake was a red velvet heart shaped cake (it was also valentines weekend). What was really nice was that once we were finished with the cake they boxed it up while the check was being signed and had it sent up to the room. The cake actually got to the room faster than we did.

The room was fairly priced for the type, size, and dates of travel. It averaged about $780/night for 4 nights. Depending on the savanna view this could be deemed worth it or overpriced. I’ve read that Jambo house is cheaper most of the time compared to Kidani; however, at peak parts of the year this might not necessarily be true.
